The maturing political South Africa is going through times that have many of us glancing back uneasily over our shoulders at the struggle that brought us democracy. But on the streets the new South Africa is often a happy one, and increasingly common.
Chris is a guide at the Point of Human Origin (POHO), at Pinnacle Point, Mossel Bay. The young man is my son, with ochre on his face, painted by Chris with his finger down in cave 13B, where a team of local and international archeologists have made groundbreaking discoveries in recent years.
This was taken outside the clubhouse of a once controversial golf-course in one of the most impressive clifftop sites to be found.
Back in town, amidst the 1970s and 80s monstrosities, are numerous striking examples of Victorian sandstone architecture, and a museum housing the replica of the boat (and other historical maritime goodies) that carried Batholomeu Diaz, arguably the first European to land on the southern Cape coast. The town deserves a walk.
Mossel Bay has excellent coffee shops, fish n chips and and a range of new wineries outside town; watch out for the soon to be launched Eden Wine Route. But stay outside in rural, countryside quiet, in Boggomsbaai, a ten minute drive from town.
