Languid and relaxed, is how I imagine the life of this boatman on Lake Malawi in 2013. A genial, happy character, from the paradisical Cape Maclear he took us to diving spots and sought out the fish eagle featured in last week’s image. I cannot recall his name as the notebook in which I wrote it has been misplaced; that happens when travelling lots and meeting people who play bit-roles in the narrative of the journey. Cape Maclear is named after Thomas, the same astronomer (and friend of explorer David Livingstone) after whom a beacon is named on Table Mountain. That’s right above where I live, yet such is the nature of foreign and local travel that we are often drawn to exotic locations before those closer to home. www.nkwichi.com www.mumboisland.com
A French holiday-maker at South Africa’s Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape province. He came specifically to surf Supertubes. His wife and kids were back at their rented beach house. Jeffreys Bay is one of the five most famous surfing destinations in the world, and hosts the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour surfing event at Super Tubes next month (July 6-17).
Fish eagle, late sunset, Lake Malawi. I was lying in a canoe, resting my lens on the prow of the fishing boat we’d hired. It was not the quickest 500mm lens and the light was low, so when pushing the shutter button I had to ask the balancing boatman, his buddy and my colleague, to tense their abs and hold their collective breath. http://www.nkwichi.com http://www.mumboisland.com
