Black rhino,Tswalu Game Reserve, South Africa. This is a typically confrontational stare-down from this prehistoric-looking creature, one of my more peaceful encounters with the more aggressive of Africa’s remaining rhino. This front-on look highlights its comparatively narrow mouth and pointed lip, used for browsing from branches, as compared to the wide lips and bigger bulk of the grazing white rhino. The man who started Tswalu, the largest private game reserve in the country, started working life selling exhausts and cut-price tyres from his backyard in his hometown of Manchester, buying a golf course and starting multimillion pound brand name homeware stores in the UK along the way. When he passed on as a youngster of 55, Stephen Boler left Tswalu to the Oppenheimer family of De Beers fame, trusting in their conservation values to take his vision forward.
